Therapy for Trauma

Trauma can have a profound and lasting impact on your mental, emotional, and physical well-being when left unaddressed. Trauma may result from a single distressing event or ongoing experiences such as abuse, neglect, loss, or chronic stress. While your mind and body are designed to protect you, unresolved trauma can keep you feeling stuck in survival mode—making it difficult to feel safe, connected, or fully present in your daily life.

At After the Storm Counseling, we offer specialized trauma therapy and PTSD treatment to help individuals process and heal from painful experiences. Trauma can show up in many ways, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex trauma, and acute stress responses. You may experience emotional symptoms such as anxiety, fear, irritability, numbness, or mood swings, as well as difficulty trusting others or maintaining relationships.

Trauma can also manifest physically and cognitively. Common symptoms include:

  • Intrusive thoughts, flashbacks, or nightmares

  • Hypervigilance or feeling constantly “on edge”

  • Avoidance of people, places, or situations that feel triggering

  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering things clearly

  • Sleep disturbances or chronic fatigue

  • Physical tension, headaches, or gastrointestinal issues

These responses are not a sign of weakness—they are your body’s natural attempt to cope with overwhelming experiences. However, when trauma remains unresolved, it can interfere with your ability to function, feel secure, and engage fully in life.

The good news is that therapy for trauma can help you safely process your experiences and regain a sense of control. Using evidence-based approaches such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy (TF-CBT), EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing), Brain Spotting and somatic-based techniques, we support you in reducing distress, building coping skills, and restoring a sense of safety in your mind and body.

Seeking professional trauma counseling is a powerful step toward healing. In a safe, supportive, and nonjudgmental space, you can begin to process what you’ve been through and move forward with greater resilience, clarity, and empowerment. Healing from trauma is possible—you don’t have to carry it alone.
